Dot JS 2017

DotJS conference Paris 2017

“Always bet on JS”!

This was the watchword of the 2017 edition of the famous conf dedicated to javascript which took place in Paris at the beginning of December.

The particular format of this meeting was a first for me: we arrive without really knowing what we are going to see, only one "track" is proposed and only the names of the speakers are broadcast.

You don't go to dotJS to discover new tools but to broaden your knowledge of the possibilities offered by javascript.

Here is a quick overview of the conferences that caught my attention.

I particularly appreciated the presentation by Thomas Watson, member of the Node.js foundation.

He amazed us by showing us, without internet access, a google map tracking in real time the position of planes in the sky!

The trick: it uses a calibrated radio antenna to listen to the waves emitted by planes. With a nodejs library, it then translates the signal into position and speed, which it finally displays on a google maps map.

“Think for yourself”

In his presentation, Adrian Holováty returned to the eternal question: framework or not framework! According to him, we need patterns and libraries more than frameworks. These tend to grow as they are adopted.

"How to really, I mean really annoy spammer"

Finally, the presentation of feross (the guy from standardjs) was the most fun of the day ????!

He looked for a way to circumvent browser rules to get the worst possible user experience. This goes through a display of popups that move with endless nyancat videos.

I advise to see this prez once released on youtube, it was really terrible!

In conclusion, it was a great day that passed very quickly. Without necessarily having provided answers to everyday problems, she offered us a real open-mindedness on the javascript ecosystem.

Great experience, to be repeated!
