What does the job of front-end developer involve?

The business of Frontend developer consists of code the GUI of a web application. Generally, the screens of an application are first designed and produced, in the form of a graphic model and functional specification documents by the Product Owner and UX designer. The developer will then turn all of this into code (HTML, CSS and Javascript) to bring the app to life within a web browser (on a computer or phone).

Can you describe a typical day of work for a front-end developer?

My typical day usually starts with “Code Review”. I look at, discuss and validate what has been developed by the members of my team. For this we make “ Pull request ", that is to say that we submit for validation by other developers the code modifications that we wish to make with a view to new development or a bug correction, for example. I then continue with the daily meeting with other members of the team. This meeting only lasts a quarter of an hour but it is a key moment when everyone will be able to briefly express themselves to inform the team about their work in progress, if they encounter any blockages, etc. So we are in sync to make teamwork more fluid. The rest of the day, I work on current developments. They are previously divided into a multitude of small tasks in order to be distributed among the developers. Each task must be validated upstream with the POs and UX designers, then downstream with the other developers and testers. In addition to coding, I also spend a lot of time talking with product managers, UX designers, testers and other developers…

What are the prospects for advancement in your profession?

Front technologies are changing a lot, being able to keep up and learn about new developments is already an evolution in itself! With experience, the natural evolution is to have a role of “ Tech Lead ". This involves spending more time rereading the work of others, establishing good development practices and generally passing on your experience. While actively participating in development and keeping our hands dirty. Likewise, an experienced developer will have more perspective to understand questions of overall organization of the code. It will therefore rather have a role ofsoftware architect. A developer can also move away from code and become a Product Owner where their technical experience will be very useful.

How is your job a job with a future?

The web is omnipresent, there are web applications for almost everything! Our daily lives are punctuated by interactions with web or mobile applications. Uses and technologies are constantly evolving, and this will probably continue. In this respect, the work of a Front developer requires constant evolution and adaptation. We never get bored and it’s exciting!
