It's Ludovic's turn to present his favorite conference of MiXiT 2022: "11 heuristics to definitely succeed in your Example Mapping workshops" by Clément HELIOU

Example Mapping by Clément Heliou

This Wednesday, May 25, I had the pleasure of attending the 2022 edition of MiXit and in particular of discovering the practice ofExample Mapping during the presentation of Clément HELIOU.

From the practice of BDD (Behaviour-Driven Development), the Example Mapping workshop is an exercise whose objective is to facilitate the stage of discovering the business concepts of an application through collaboration and conversation between the various players in the field.

Clément HELIOU therefore recalls the fundamental principles of this exercise which will be short (about 25 minutes), will bring together a limited number of actors (a Developer, a Product Owner and a Quality Assurance Manager for example) and will be devoted to a User Special story.

This discovery is thus divided into three stages:

  • Explore the domain
  • Agree on the details
  • Establish the rules

By convention, a color code is established to define the workshop results map:

  • Yellow for the User Story to explore
  • Red for unanswered questions
  • Blue for identified business rules
  • Green for concrete examples illustrating business rules

Interesting remark, Clément points out that in the results of an Example Mapping workshop, the examples are the most important elements because they make it possible to find the business rules and the definition of the User Story. This remark echoes the conclusion of the paradoxical experience of the two hard disks cited by Uncle Bob in episode 22 of CleanCoders: it is better to lose the production code than to lose the test code.

In addition to Clément's valuable feedback that you will be able to discover by watching the recording of this presentation, the ninth tip "Knowing how to look at your card from above" allows you to extract valuable deductions from the results of the workshop:

  • A predominance of red will tell you that a key person is missing from your workshop
  • The blue will indicate that your User Story is certainly trying to cover too large a perimeter and will have to be “stripped down”
  • Finally, an abundance of green will signal that it will be necessary to cut the realization of your User Story

In conclusion, a very interesting conference that makes me want to look into the two books from the collection The Bdd Book Discovery and Formulation recommended by Clément HELIOU.
